New Windows and Doors with the Canada Greener Homes Loan

You may have heard of the Canadian Greener Homes Initiative, or more specifically, about the rebate portion of the program. Delivered through Enbridge Gas for Ontario residents, you can receive money back to cover the cost of space heating, insulation, smart thermostats and new windows and doors.

A Two-Part Program – HER+ Rebates

Called the Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (or HER+ for short), you can receive a maximum of $10,000 for eligible projects if you qualify after a home assessment. These rebates can help maximize your renovation budget.

For example, If your windows and doors are identified as needing work through your energy assessment, you could get an Enbridge HER Plus rebate for replacing them. You could receive up to $325 for each Energy Star-certified window or door to cover costs.

Canada Greener Homes Loan

However, the rebates are only part of the program. The Canada Greener Homes Loan provides homeowners with financing to increase their homes’ energy efficiency. These loans are interest-free for ten years, and you can qualify to borrow between $5000 and $40,000 towards your projects. If you have additional doors and windows you’d like to replace above what’s covered by the rebate program or are looking for a way to finance the balance of these renos, these loans could help.

Applying for the Canada Greener Homes Loan

To get started, you will need to find an energy advisor in your area. They will assess your home, providing you with proposed retrofits to improve its energy efficiency. You can only apply for a loan on eligible projects recommended by your advisor. Some examples include new windows and doors, upgraded home insulation, air sealing and renewable energy initiatives.

Once you have your home evaluation and recommendations, you can determine which projects you want to start. You will need to obtain quotes from contractors for the desired work as part of your loan application.

Receiving Canada Greener Homes Loan

It is recommended that you receive the decision on your loan application before starting any work. If approved, you can receive up to 15% of your loan upfront as a deposit for your contractors.

Once the project is completed, an energy advisor will return to your home. They will assess the impact of the finished product. The post-retrofit evaluation will be used to pay out the remainder of your loan.
