FAQ

Find Your Answers with Our Windows & Doors FAQ

Why custom windows?

Custom windows are a better option over mass-produced simply because every custom window is designed specifically to fit your home. That means they provide maximum efficiency and have the look and colour you imagined. Why settle for pre-made windows that don’t fit when custom, high-efficiency windows add value and save you money?

I want to have a custom window/door built. How does that work?

It all starts by booking your free, no-obligation consultation where we can assess your needs and the options available. From there, we can source the proper materials and manufacturing. And finally, we’re there to custom install your new door and/or windows to match the vision you have for the project.

Is it ever worth it to repair a door or window, rather than replace it?

It can be an incredible waste of money and effort to completely replace a door that only needs a new part, like hardware or glass. On the other hand, repeatedly trying to repair a door that needs to be replaced will cost you more in the long term.

The best approach is to book a free consultation so we can provide an assessment and options.

Is there a type of window frame construction that is more energy efficient?

Windows with a one-piece frame are generally preferred because there is less potential for air leakage, combined with maximum visibility.

Can replacing my old doors save me money on heating and cooling costs?

High quality replacement windows and doors, properly sealed and installed, can have a profound impact on your heating and cooling costs. In fact, according to the latest National Research Council of Canada report, high-efficiency windows and doors can reduce your energy bill by up to 16%!

Will energy-efficient windows make my home more comfortable?

In a word, yes – but this depends on the condition of the windows and doors you currently have. Energy-efficient windows and doors can reduce and often eliminate chilly drafts, allow you to keep a higher humidity level during the winter, and keep your home cooler during the summer.

How can I be sure I am purchasing an energy-efficient product?

Always look for the Energy Star® symbol and label. This label shows that a door or window has been certified to meet the strict and exacting technical requirements to make it one of the most energy-efficient products you can buy.

What’s more, you should only buy windows and doors that are Energy Star® certified.

The Energy Star® program is administered by Natural Resources Canada (NRC), where manufacturers submit their products for testing and certification. Usually an Energy Star® certified product is in the top 15 to 30 percent of its class for energy efficiency.

For more information in the Energy Star® program and testing methods, visit the NRC here.

The doors and windows in my home are more than 25 years old. How do they compare with new products on the market?

Today’s modern, energy-efficient windows and doors are far better products than those produced 25 years ago. Today, windows and doors are more airtight, with new advanced technology such as low-emissivity (low-E) glass – an inert layer of gas between the panes – as well as improved designs for hardware.

What do I need to do to prepare my home for the installation of my replacement doors?

There are a few things to keep in mind before we arrive to install your new product:

    1. Someone will need to be home in order to allow our installation team access to your home.
    2. If you can, we ask that you clear your driveway for our truck to park as close to your house as possible.
    3. Wherever possible, move any furniture away from the windows and doors that will be replaced. If you need help moving larger objects, we are happy to assist, but we cannot be held responsible for any damages.
    4. Take all blinds, shades, curtains, and other window treatments down from any windows being replaced.
    5. Turn off any security alarms.

What is involved in having a quote done?

During a typical quote or consultation, we will sit down with you to discuss your needs, take measurements, answer questions and concerns, discuss options, and provide you with a written quote for what you’ve decided on before we leave. Typically, this takes about 30 minutes, but if you have more questions or you need to spend more time with our consultant, we will stay as long as necessary to put your mind at ease!

Do you install windows in the winter months?

Yes! We install both windows and doors year-round! As a matter of fact, winter may even be the best time for an installation:

  • It’s often easier to spot problems with your windows during the winter months.
  • You’re likely to find better prices on windows in the winter.
  • Buying windows in the winter usually gives you a lot more flexibility when it comes to choosing an installation date.

How long does a typical installation take?

The vast majority of our projects are completed in a single day. That said, depending on the amount of work to be completed, some projects can take up to 5 days to complete.

Does it cost anything for a quote?

All our quotes and consultations are FREE! It’s our goal to provide each new client with the best possible experience when it comes to finding replacement windows and doors. Whether you join us in the showroom, or meet us in the privacy of your own home, our representatives are ready to answer all your questions and provide you with the information you’ll need to make an informed decision.

Is buying and installing windows or doors on my own a valid option as a homeowner?

Yes, but it’s a risky option. Working with Torwin, you’re getting a much better warranty than if you were on your own. Plus you get a much superior product than what is sold off the shelf at a hardware store. And best of all, you are relying on our team’s experience and expertise to get the job done quickly and easily.

What many homeowners don’t realize is that the sort of windows and doors sold in hardware stores are usually meant for new home construction or renovations. They are not of the same quality of replacement windows and doors that we provide.

This lower quality – and price – is because often renovators are looking for the most cost effective solution without long term needs in mind. These products do not last as long, or perform as well, as replacement windows and doors from Torwin. Plus the Torwin Team provides the benefit of a warranty.
